Local contractor Ertech has been awarded a $16.6 million contract to build the first phase of Perth Airport’s Terminal 1 forecourt redevelopment.

The scope of work involves Ertech constructing an expansive landscaped forecourt, which will improve access to the terminal.

“The paved forecourt area will provide a more pleasant environment for passengers, with new facilities such as a bus station, improved pedestrian access and pick-up/drop-off areas, covered walkways and seating,” Perth Airport said in a statement.

The first section of the expanded forecourt, directly in front of the entry to the new domestic pier and international departures area, is expected to be completed to coincide with the opening of the pier later this year.

Other features of the project will include full WiFi coverage, additional lighting, public art and landscaping incoroporating plants native to Western Australia,” the airport said.

“The forecourt redevelopment will also make provision for future terminal expansion plans, including new retail outlets.”

Chief executive Brad Geatches said Ertech’s proposal promised to deliver a quality product that will enhance customer experience.

The T1 makeover forms part of a $42 million redevelopment project to upgrade the forecourt and car parks, which was announced last year.

In December, Brierty was awarded an $11 million contract for the realignment of Horrie Miller Drive in front of T1, as well as upgrades to the existing short term car park.

Densford Civil was also awarded a contract to expand the T1 short term car park, which included the construction of a new entry and exit point, to improve traffic flow and circulation within the car park.

The car park expansion will provide 1,826 car bays and 52 dedicated motorcycle bays.

The forecourt project is scheduled for completion in May next year.
