The Shops at Ellenbrook has become the first Western Australian shopping centre to achieve a Green Star certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.
The centre’s stage two expansion was awarded a 4 star Green Star certification for its sustainable design and construction, which focused on conserving resources, reducing waste and improving the indoor environment of the building.
The Shops at Ellenbrook was designed by architects Hames Sharley and constructed by Built Environs and Aria Projects.
“Incorporating a high degree of green initiatives into the design was reflective of the client and the project team’s strong commitment to sustainable development,” Hames Sharley associate director Gary Mackintosh said.
“The project has proved to be a fantastic opportunity to work amongst a talented team of consultants, and with a client (Insurance Commission of Western Australia) that had the drive and foresight to lead the pack in terms of retail sustainability in WA.
“Not only has this outcome set a new benchmark in the industry but it will encourage other retail developers to undertake a sustainable solution to retail design.”
