Western Energy Pty Ltd has been given the green light by the Economic Regulation Authority to operate a 120 megawatt power station at Kwinana which will supply electricity to the South West Interconnected System.

Western Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of West Perth-based Perth Energy, which supplies electricity to contestable and small-use customers in WA.

The ERA has granted a 30 year licence for the power station, starting from September 15, 2008.

Work is expected to start on the $120 million, gas fired power station next month and is scheduled for completion by June 2010.

The station has been on the drawing board since 2003.
