EI in focus at seminars

EMOTIONAL intelligence, or EI, will be on the agenda when American HR specialist Dr Dorothy Marcic visits Perth next month.

She will present several seminars during her stay, including sessions on the importance of interpersonal skills.

Dr Marcic is the professor of Business and director of Graduate Programs in Human Resource Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where she runs a consultancy.

She will host two seminars for the UWA Extension program. Emotional Intelligence at Work will teach people how to measure emotional intelligence, avoid emotional blow-ups, stop being defensive at meetings, learn to appreciate others, and increase their motivation.

The seminar is limited to 30 people and will be held on August 16 from 9am-1pm. At a seminar on August 22 Dr Marcic will deconstruct the pop charts to show the evolving role of women in the 20th century.

Dr Marcic also will speak at the Human Resources Practitioners’ Conference at The Esplanade Hotel on August 15 and 16.

The conference includes a host of international and national speakers and will concentrate on HR issues such as attracting and retaining high quality staff, remaining competitive in an international labour market, and promoting diversity in your workforce. Other speakers include National Health and Medical Research Council chief executive officer Professor Alan Pettigrew, MT Eliza Business School program director Clarence Da Gama Pinto, Blake Dawson Waldron partner David Parker, and Perth business-woman Janet Holmes a Court.
