Rather than waiting an indefinite amount of time to open its cellar door due to construction near its site, Drakesbrook Wines founder Bernie Worthington decided he would open the vineyard’s cellar door at neighbouring Lake Navarino Resort.
“Because of reconstruction of the Lake Navarino dam we couldn’t get access to our property for two years and we had intended opening a cellar door adjacent to the picnic area, and that is still to be completed,” Mr Worthington says.
Rather than waiting for a date that couldn’t be set in stone, Mr Worthington decided they should open the cellar door within the resort.
He says interest in the the area, at Waroona, an hour and a half from Perth, is now gathering momentum.
“The resort is very popular and there are now a number of local wineries in the area so tourists can do a loop of about half a dozen wineries,” Mr Worthington says.
“The resort is popular, it’s one of the most popular inland ski lakes, so there is a captive market there. They have a restaurant that is fully licensed and we thought it made sense to sell the wine there.”
