Downer wins $400m in mining, LNG work

Downer EDI has secured more than $400 million worth of contracts on mining and liquified natural gas projects, with the bulk covering operations in the Pilbara.

The engineering company said today the contracts demonstrate the opportunities for the company in the mining, oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

The contracts include a two-year agreement worth $170 million with Wesfarmers for expansion work at its Curragh coal operation in central Queensland.

Downer will work on the design and construction of a coal processing facility to increase the mine's capacity.

A further $90 million deal has been reached with BHP Billiton to provide electrical and instrumentation services for its expansion of iron ore facilities in Western Australia.

Downer has also secured more than $70 million worth of electrical and instrumentation contracts for Woodside Petroleum's Pluto LNG project off the WA coast, plus additional electrical contracts with other clients worth over $75 million.

Chief executive Geoff Knox said Downer EDI's work in hand stood at over $16 billion.

"These wins reinforce Downer's position as a leading provider of mechanical and electrical contracting services," Mr Knox said.

Downer shares were up 44 cents, or 5.2 per cent, to $8.90 at 1440 AEDT.
