Dollar reaches new 18-year high

THE Australian dollar reached an 18-year high on Monday, as sub-prime mortgage market concerns weakened the US dollar. The local currency hit US84.97 cents shortly before noon – its highest level since February 1989 – to close at 84.84. However, the Australian unit met resistance at the US85 cent mark, as traders briefly slowed their demand for high interest rate money.
