Developer wins on second try

BUILDING of a three-storey office and apartment building has been approved by council – just three weeks after being knocked back.

At its 22 June meeting council refused the $1 million development proposed for 1010 to 1018 Wellington Street.

However, the resubmitted proposal was approved by the narrowest of margins with Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass forced to use his casting vote.

Council staff had again recommended refusal because it did not comply with setback requirements and was not consistent with the orderly and proper planning of the locality.

Councillor Tess Stroud moved the application be approved, saying it would bring life to a run down area.
