Dardanup a region leader: Edwardes

ENVIRONMENT Minister Cheryl Edwardes has described the Shire of Dardanup as a leader among the South West Shires in terms of environmental management.

Mrs Edwardes said the shire’s waste landfill and recycling centre on Banksia Road, Dardanup was delivering environmental benefits and services to educate the community in how best to care for the environment.

“This is the first site in the South West region to be constructed with a dedicated clay-liner and underdrainage system, which prevent dangerous chemicals from leaching into ground water,” she said.

The site replaces the old unmanned landfill sites at Burekup and Wellington Dam, which are not clay-lined and have only basic recycling procedures.

Mrs Edwardes said this landfill site underlined the triple bottom line ethos the WA Government used in environmental matters – that there should be a social, economic and environmental benefit from the decisions and actions it took.
