Dam study awarded

WA’S Waters and Rivers Commission and two consulting groups have won a tender to conduct a feasibility study on storage dams and water harvesting in the Sultanate of Oman.

The commission has previously been involved in water management projects in the arid Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne-Murchison regions.

The experience gained should assist in helping the Omani people develop their water resources.

Geo-Eng and Dames and Moore will review hydrological information, asses local water resource issues and recommend suitable sites for dams in Oman.

At the same time, the WA Water Corporation has a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian state of Sarawak to undertake water, waste-water and other water-related activities there.

The corporation has already undertaken work under a different agreement in Sarawak involving a dam design.

It is hoped a new agreement can be forged between Malaysia’s water agency and the Water Corporation – leading to increased export dollars for WA.
