Coolgardie celebrates anniversary

WITH last year’s Beaconsfield mine disaster a reminder of the potential perils of the industry, Coolgardie is preparing to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its own tale of heroism. On March 19, 1907, Modesto Varischetti became trapped 1,000 feet below ground at the Westralia Mines NL in Bonnievale, 12 kilometres north of Coolgardie. The miner spent 12 days below 100 feet of water in a semi vertical shaft before he was rescued by a consortium of deep sea divers and underground mine rescuers. The Shire of Coolgardie will host two days of celebrations on March 24 and 25 to commemorate the anniversary.
