Ian Cochrane will step down as chair of mining services business Perenti, with the company citing ill health as reason for the decision.

Mr Cochrane joined Perenti's board in 1994 and became its deputy chair in 2015 before being promoted to chair two years later.

His board experience outside of Perenti has been wide-ranging, having in recent years chaired Wright Prospecting, VOC Group and Dacian Gold.

He is also at present a director of Ardross Group, a position he has held since 2014.

Robert Cole, who serves as Perenti's deputy chair, will now step into the role of chair.

Mr Cochrane said he was extremely proud to have been associated with Perenti for more than 27 years.

Perenti's managing director Mark Norwell thanked Mr Cochrane for his service and offered his thoughts to him and his family as he works through his health issues.

Shares in Perenti were trading at $1 as at 3pm AEST.
