GLENCORE International has been awarded a $158 million contract to supply 2.77 million tonnes of thermal coal to a Mexican power plant.
It is the second time in six months the company has secured a contract issued by the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission.
Federal Trade Minister Mark Vaile said the announcement reflected the excellent reputation enjoyed by Australian coal.
"This contract represents a further boost to Australia’s growing exports to Mexico," he said. "Two-way trade between Mexico and Australia has doubled over the past five years to $1 billion.
"The increasingly diverse and dynamic relationship between Australia and Mexico offers enormous opportunities for Australian business."
