Everyone who has ever worked in Western Australia knows our business community is very tight knit, where relationships are as valuable as the resources we dig out of the ground. From boardrooms in the CBD to regional project hubs, success and future success is amplified by who you know and what you know about them.
For leaders and executives, building meaningful connections isn’t just about networking. It’s about being informed; understanding the people, the companies, and the market dynamics that drive WA’s economy forward.
The strongest professional networks are built on insight. When you know what matters to your peers, your clients, and your industry, every conversation carries more weight. You’re able to ask sharper questions, add more value, and identify collaboration opportunities others overlook.
Informed leaders;
- Connect with purpose. They understand where their industry is heading and who’s driving the change.
- Engage with influence. They bring context to discussions, which earns respect and builds credibility.
- Collaborate strategically. By recognising emerging players and market shifts early, they forge partnerships that last and focus on a value exchange that works for both parties.
Information, in this sense, isn’t just power, it’s the catalyst for connection.
Over my time in business, I have focused heavily on information collecting and filtering. Nothing has been as strong a return on investment as the information I get from our own editorial and research team. It gives me a history of 30 plus years of business information and influence.
I have picked up connections and clients from articles and data throughout my entire 7 years at Business News and to this day I still find opportunity regularly. Whether Claire Tyrrell reports on a new development, Tom Zaunmayr uncovers a new regional business with multi-million turnover or Isabel Vieira releases the new Power 500 for the year, there is business and opportunity pouring out from our team consistently.
Amplify this with data trends that matter, and you have access to a valuable combination of content that ensures your knowledge leaves a lasting impression on that next connection.
But where do you start?
Our platforms do more than report on business; they connect business.
- People: Through our Data & Insights platform, subscribers gain exclusive access to detailed profiles on thousands of WA’s most influential executives, directors, and decision-makers. You learn who is connected to who, where they came from in business, what projects they work on and where they invest their time.
- Intelligence: Every story, data insight, and special publication, such as the Power 500, Book of Lists and Rich 100 reveals how WA’s companies and leaders are connected, helping you map the state’s corporate landscape and understand where influence truly lies. This data gives you the blueprint to build a network, to follow the right people as they change roles and influence across the state.
- Engagement: Business News flagship breakfast and lunch events and award programs (such as the WA Business Awards and 40under40) bring the community together to celebrate leadership, innovation and shared success. When you host clients or just network within a room you will meet people who think the same as you, they are there for growth, success and ambition. 7 years in at Business News and events are my greatest tool for facilitating meaningful conversions and growing my network.
These touchpoints form the backbone of WA’s business network, built on credibility, insight, and the need for connection.
Being an effective leader means you don’t rely on chance introductions or surface-level conversation. It is about cultivating informed relationships backed by a deep understanding of where influence, opportunity and expertise intersect. Unfortunately, this isn’t by osmosis, you need the tools, and ambition to have the biggest impact.
A strong network is not just about taking; it’s about giving too. You need to bring substance to the table and provide value back to the people you are doing business with. Confidence attracts collaboration. Your insight builds trust, and your access to the right information and the understanding of how to use it turns every interaction into an opportunity.
For me in my career of Business Development, Business News isn’t just a publication. It has been a meeting place for likeminded, ambitious people. A place where leaders come together to learn, grow and succeed. We aim to provide the value of information and education so that the leaders of today can make the best decisions and the leaders of tomorrow are ready to take the baton. When you subscribe, you’re not just gaining access to stories; you’re joining a network that thrives on insight, connection, and progress.
