Carnegie signs second defence contract

Carnegie Wave Energy will investigate the feasibility of supplying wave power energy to a defence communications station, in its second contract with the Department of Defence.

The wave energy developer today announced it had been commissioned by the defence department to assess the viability of its CETO wave energy technology to supply power to the Harold E Holt station at Exmouth.

The station provides radio transmission to the Royal Australian Navy and the United States Navy ships and submarines in the wester Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Carnegie said the high power transmitter at the station is considered to be the most power transmission station in the southern hemisphere.

"The feasibility assessment will look at factors including wave resource, environmental values, geotechnical and geophysical conditions and connectivity to the remote HEH power system," Carnegie said.

Earlier this year, Carnegie signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Defence for a planned CETO wave energy project in the waters off Garden Island, which is home to Australia's largest naval base.

Shares in Carnegie were up one cent to 23.5c at 13:50 AEDST.
