Sam Walsh, Chief Executive, Rio Tinto Iron Ore and Chairman of the WA Future Fund, today announced the appointment of Dr Carmen Lawrence to the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund Board.

Dr Lawrence will replace founding Board member Kerry Sanderson, who has relocated to London to take up the post of Agent-General for Western Australia.

Established in 2001, the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund was set up to enhance the community investment activities of Rio Tinto businesses in Western Australia. Its objective is to support large, long-term State-wide projects that result in direct and lasting benefits to WA and contribute to a stronger and more sustainable state.

Since 2001, the Future Fund has entered into 36 partnerships with a range of WA government departments, community and not-for-profit organisations.

The Future Fund is governed by a Board that includes four senior representatives from Rio Tinto in Western Australia and four external community representatives. Dr Lawrence will join non-executive Board members Janet Holmes à Court AC, Tony Howarth AO and Fred Chaney AO.

"I am delighted that Dr Lawrence has agreed to join our dynamic and engaged Board. I am certain that she will provide the benefit of wide-ranging ideas and views, in addition to her vast experience and networks," Mr Walsh said.

"In this time of challenges and change, Rio Tinto's commitment to the Western Australian community remains constant. We continually seek new and innovative ways to contribute to the social fabric of Western Australia. The WA Future Fund board members ensure we manage a range of successful cross-sector partnerships that reflect the requirements of the broader community and make a positive, lasting difference to the state".

Among other contributions to public life, Dr Lawrence is a former Premier of Western Australia and was National President of the Australian Labor Party. She is currently a Professorial Fellow at UWA, establishing a research centre examining the factors contributing towards fanatical ideas and extreme behaviour.

Rio Tinto's operations in Western Australia span the Kimberley, Pilbara, Mid-West Gascoyne and Perth metropolitan area. Community support is provided state-wide (managed by the Rio Tinto Community Investment team and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund) and regional (by relevant business units). In 2007, more than $12 million was invested in the Western Australian community, not including significant in-kind support.
