Cape, Giovenco win big Wheatstone contracts

Cape plc and Giovenco Industries have each been awarded major contracts at Chevron's $29 billion Wheatstone LNG project near Onslow.

UK-based Cape has been awarded a $275 million contract to provide painting, insulation and fireproofing services for the massive project.

The contract is expected to create 490 new Australian jobs, including 390 metal workers, blaster and painters, cryogenic insulators and fire proofers supported by 100 supervision, safety, administration and management roles.

"We are delighted to announce the award of this contract which will create new local employment opportunities and recognises the management and expertise of our recently reshaped Australian business," Cape chief executive Joe Oatley said.

"Building on Cape’s considerable world-class LNG construction expertise, this contract will provide a solid base of project activity for our Australian business."

Giovenco has meanwhile been awarded an $85 million contract to provide scaffold erection services to support mechanical installation, painting, insulation and other works throughout the construction of the project.

The contract, awarded by lead engineering contractor Bechtel, is expected to create more than 150 onsite jobs.

“We are excited by the job opportunities this project brings to Western Australia,” Giovenco managing director Paul Giovenco said.

“The contract award allows us to further strengthen our long term relationship with Bechtel and Chevron and gives us a platform to continue our long-term commitment to Western Australia within Perth and regional centres.”

The Wheatstone project will consist of two LNG trains with a combined capacity of 8.9 million tonnes per annum and a domestic gas plant.

First production from Wheatstone is targeted for 2016.
