Broome’s Cable Beach Resort has taken top honours at this year’s tourism awards, also receiving recognition for its business and conference facilities, restaurant and catering services, and luxury accommodation.
Rottnest Island won the major tourist attraction and heritage and cultural tourism award and the 2014 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro won the award for major festival and event.
In total 77 awards were given out at the 2014 Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards over the weekend, including Cable Beach Resort taking home the Sir David Brand award.
Acting Tourism Minister John Day said the state government had a strategy to growing the amount spent by visitors to WA from $8.3 billion currently to $12 billion by 2020.
Cable Beach Resort general manager hospitality Ron Sedon told Business News while the majority of its patronage came from leisure visitors, the resort managed to re-attract people who originally attended for business and came back for a holiday.
He said the Broome region benefitted from direct flights from Perth and eastern cities and many tourism operators provided activities for visitors, including those that Cable Beach Club Resort helped support.
“We on-sell and on-contract to local suppliers to a high level. I think we share the wealth around the time quite admirably,” Mr Sedon said.
