Burswood Park set for 20-year plan

The Burswood Peninsula has been earmarked for three distinct precincts under a 20-year masterplan for the riverside site revealed today.

The Burswood Master Plan shows a proposal for themed precincts – Festival, Riverside and Forest – an outdoor amphitheatre, and an activity hub with a mini golf course, canoe hire, and cafe.

Stakeholders will be asked for their feedback on the 20-year vision, which was developed by Hassell.

The proposed outdoor amphitheatre in the Festival precinct will accommodate more than 10,000 people and will be an option for world-class performances, cultural and community events, according to the Burswood Park board.

The Forest precinct could include landscapes to reflect the Whadjuk Noongar region through collaboration with Indigenous artists and designers.

Burswood Park board president John McGrath said the site already played host to a range of events, and was a gateway to the city.

“We are now looking to the future and the sort of attractions that Perth needs to provide for a growing community, which also give visitors to Perth a reason to stay longer,” he said.

“The overarching goal is for Burswood Park to remain as Perth's most vibrant, green, and inclusive precinct, catering to the enjoyment of both current and future generations.

“Acknowledging the historical use of the Burswood Peninsula and river by the Whadjuk people, their narratives will become integral to the planning process for Burswood Park.

“Engaging with local elders will ensure the authentic integration of these stories into the parkland's future.”

Burswood Park board chief executive Linda Kut said the master plan was the result of a two-year comprehensive process.

Mr McGrath said 350,000 patrons were estimated to visit Burswood Park each year.
