The housing industry has welcomed the state government’s launch of an online tool that will allow developers and the general public to access information on land and housing supply.
Planning Minister John Day released the Urban Development Program Online: State of Land and Housing Supply initiative today, which will combine information from industry and government to provide a clear picture of the planning and development pipeline.
“The State of Land and Housing Supply reports on the key demand drivers of population, labour force and incomes in addition to the supply status of zoned land, planning approvals, land development, vacant lots, lot listing, building approvals, total dwelling stocks and property listings,” Mr Day said.
“By making this information available online, a major step forward has been achieved in the convenience and ease of access to time-series trends and the latest status of the state of supply.”
The Housing Industry Association said the online portal was a long-awaited and welcomed facility for the residential construction industry.
HIA acting executive director David Endersby said the industry had long viewed the availability of land as a crucial element in the accessibility of housing in Western Australia.
“The residential construction industry and the consuming public will gain substantial benefit from the launch of the Urban Development Program Online by the government,” Mr Endersby said.
“The transparency and visibility of available lots for sale is a real step forward in addressing the issue of land availability throughout the Perth metropolitan area.
“Not only does this tool provide stakeholders and prospective purchasers with a window into the corners of the overall planning approvals process, the HIA hopes that it will play a major role in the forecasting of land availability through the next housing cycle.”
