Brierty bags $300m contract

Brierty and three Aboriginal contracting firms have won a $300 million contract with Rio Tinto to complete mining and civil works on a project in the Pilbara.

Brierty said design and planning works would start immediately on the four-and-a-half year contract, which will be undertaken along with Ngarluma & Yindjibarndi Foundation, Karlayura Construction Services and Eastern Guruma.

The works are for Rio Tinto’s Western Turner Syncline stage 2 project, west of Tom Price.

Brierty managing director Peter McBain said the company had been working hard to secure additional contract mining work following the completion of its contract with Karara Mining.

“With the mining portion of our works at Karara complete, the Rio Tinto contract provides a source of long-term revenue in addition to the other long-term contracts, such as the Zuccoli development in the Northern Territory, and ongoing smaller civil contracts we continue to win.”

Mr McBain said he was pleased to have been able to sign the agreement with the three Aboriginal partners.

“Indigenous engagement and employment is a core part of our vision at Brierty and I look forward to working with our partners to provide employment, business and mentoring opportunities through this contract.”

The contract Brierty has won with Rio Tinto is the second in as many weeks after the contractor was awarded a $9.9 million contract, along with Karlayura, for work’s on Rio’s West Angelas mine.
