Boomerang Alliance will help plastic phase-out

The McGowan government has enlisted a "waste minimisation" group to help small business cope with the looming ban on many single-use plastic products.

From July 1, the hospitality industry won't be allowed to use single-use straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates or bowls.

The phasing-out of many other items will continue until a total ban begins next January. From this October, the ban will also include disposable plastic cups used to serve cold drinks.

“As a government, we are committed to lowering the amount of waste that ends up in landfill and to reducing the use of single-use plastics, which are harmful for our environment," said Environment Minister Reece Whitby.

Boomerang Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation specialising in reducing the use of plastic products and recycling, will be available to business operators needing guidance as they transition away from single-use plastics.

The group's founders were instrumental in getting container deposit schemes operating throughout Australia. The alliance represents more than 50 organisations trying to end plastic pollution across the country.

“By engaging with Boomerang Alliance, businesses can take advantage of the knowledge and experience of people who have expertise in the field, and who can offer long-term solutions," Mr Whitby said. "I urge all businesses that use single-use plastic products to register to join the program.”

Any business or person who continues to supply prescribed plastic items, including balloons, can be fined up to $5000.

"An adult commits an offence if a child in the adult’s care releases a balloon inflated with gas that causes it to rise in the air," the legislation reads.
