Westgold Resources will resume operations at its Big Bell mine, following preliminary investigations into the fatal incident that claimed the life of worker Paige Counsell.

Ms Counsell was struck by a mobile plant at the underground gold mine, located 24 kilometres north-west of Cue, on Tuesday and passed away while in transit to Perth.

The WA Department of Mines, Industry, Regulation and Safety has now cleared the site to resume operations after completing its preliminary investigations into the incident.

In a statement released to the ASX today, Westgold Resources said Ms Counsell had been a valued member of the company’s whole owned mining services subsidiary Minterra Pty Ltd.

“The company again expresses its deepest sympathy to Paige’s family, friends and colleagues. Westgold is engaged with Paige’s family to ensure they are supported throughout this difficult time,” the statement said.

“In recognition of the distress caused by the incident on our tight-knit workforce at Big Bell, Westgold and Minterra have elected to gradually return to regular operational activities.

“This will allow time for all of our employees and contractors at site to receive counselling and feel comfortable returning to work.

“As such it is expected that operations will progressively return to normal over the coming weeks.

“The safety and wellbeing of our workforce is always Westgold’s first priority.

“The company affirms its commitment to ensuring that risks are identified and managed in order to provide a safe working environment.”

The Big Bell mine recommenced mining this year, after it was abandoned in 2003.

At the time of writing Westgold shares were up 5.9 per cent at $2.77 per share.
