Batter called to plate at Lathlain Oval

A MOVE to allow Baseball WA to use Lathlain Oval for baseball matches and to house its administration is a step closer to fruition.

Baseball WA is seeking a five-year lease.

The Town of Victoria Park conditionally approved the request at its August 22 meeting.

Baseball WA has to also receive approval from the Perth Football Club, which is a tenant of Lathlain Oval.

To allow baseball matches to be played at the oval, capital works including lighting, a clay-skinned infield and padded perimeter fencing have to be provided.

These are expected to cost about $650,000.

Planning approval will be necessary to allow the type of lighting towers Baseball WA is proposing.

Baseball WA has indicated it will put $45,000 towards the works. The Ministry of Sport and Recreation has not committed to provide any funding for the venture.

A staff note to council said it was hard to see how the Town or residents would benefit from Baseball WA using Lathlain Oval without some cash or in-kind contribution such as upgrading of the facilities being made by Baseball WA.

Victoria Park residents were asked to voice their concerns about the proposal and council received 251 submissions.

The majority of the submissions were in favour of Baseball WA using the oval as its base.

Conditions were imposed to meet concerns in regard to parking, noise and lighting.
