Basil wins

Basil Zempilas has been elected the 56th lord mayor of the City of Perth.

With all votes counted, Mr Zempilas won with 29 per cent of the vote, while Di Bain finished a close second with 25 per cent.

Brodie McCulloch finished in third with 12 per cent, Mark Gibson in fourth with 11 per cent, Sandy Anghie in fifth with 10 per cent, Bruce Reynolds in sixth with six per cent and Tim Schwass in seventh with just under six per cent.

Mr Zempilas had widely been tipped as the frontrunner since he began flirting with a bid in January, earning the endorsement of former lord mayor Lisa Scaffidi a few months later.

His campaign had largely focused on addressing crime and homelessness and was supported by several candidates running for council, including Friends Restaurant owner Clyde Bevan and Strata Community Australia WA president Catherine Lezer.

Both candidates were elected to council last night, alongside Brent Fleeton, Liam Gobbert, Viktor Ko and Rebecca Gordon.

Despite falling short in their bids for lord mayor, Ms Bain and Ms Anghie both won a seat on council.

Messrs Gobbert, Fleeton, Ko and Bevan will serve just one year before being up for re-election, while the remaining four candidates will recontest their positions in 2023.

Yesterday's results come one day after the Town of Cambridge held an extraordinary election to fill a vacant council position for a one-year term.

Retired builder Rob Fredericks won that election by a more than two-to-one margin over former adviser to Michaelia Cash, David De Garis.
