Barnett seeks urgent meeting with Inpex

Premier-elect Colin Barnett will seek an urgent meeting with Inpex Ltd to encourage the Japanese company and its joint venture partner to build a $12 billion liquefied natural gas plant in Western Australia.

The joint venture is currently weighing up the possibility of constructing the plant either on the Maret Islands in WA or in Darwin Habour.

ABC radio reported that the Northern Territory government said it has done all it can to persuade Inpex and Total E&P Australia to build the plant in Darwin, even calling an early election.

Inpex is currently carrying out its second drill program for the project in Darwin Habour.

During the election campaign, Mr Barnett said that the $12 billion LNG plant would be the one of the first issues he would tackle if elected.
