The future of the state's $1.1 billion stadium at Kitchener Park is still in doubt with Premier Colin Barnett refusing to give any commitments to the AFL when he meets with the chief later this week.

Why should taxpayers pay money to support the AFL? They are definitely big enough, ugly enough and cashed up enough to undertake works deemed necessary. I would speculate that the AFL isn't really interested in people going to games, it's the TV ratings that matter and now with digital TV, every telecast can look like its a sellout, for that is what it is. Professional sport without sportsmanship is mindless reality TV, the drug of our nation that stops the population objectively scrutinising what our governments are doing with our country. As a society we can choose to support endeavours that benefit society as a whole, elevating our way of life, or we can choose to support a few that time after time are disrespectful, arrogant and unlawful. Perhaps a national draft for surgeons, researchers and inventors with corresponding mass media blanket coverage about the shoes their partner wore to the alumni awards night may change our tack. The redevelopment of Subiaco Oval would be the first capital works program that I would delete in government. A billion dollars would save a lot of lives if spent on our country roads.
