BMT Oceanica has won a contract for Water Corporation to monitor its ocean outlets.

Perth-based marine and coastal environmental specialist BMT Oceanica has been selected to provide ocean outlet monitoring services for the Water Corporation.

The company will oversee the Water Corporation's ocean discharge programs and ensure monitoring methods are up to date and consistent with international best-practice.

BMT Oceanica is a subsidiary of international design, engineering and risk management consultancy BMT, which acquired Western Australia-based Oceanica Consulting in 2012.

It is increasingly active in the aquaculture sector, having announced a partnership with seafood and agribusiness advisory group SmartAqua earlier this month, and was also appointed the state government's lead consultant on a bid to establish an aquaculture development zone in the Abrolhos Islands earlier this year.

The Department of Fisheries is planning to establish a 3,000 hectare aquaculture development zone for fish farming, not including molluscs, crustaceans or other aquatic animals.

BMT Oceanica has more than 20 years of direct ocean outfall management experience and has played a key role in the development, maintenance and evolution of all of the State’s major ocean outfall monitoring programs,” BMT Oceanic project director Mark Bailey said.

BMT Oceanica, Water Corporation and Western Australia’s environmental regulators are all driven by a passion for WA’s unique marine environment and share the view that it is our responsibility to maintain it for future generations.

“We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the Water Corporation on this very important project”.
