BHP signs up YMCA for Pilbara childcare

Mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd has signed up YMCA of Perth Inc to develop a childcare strategy for the Pilbara, the centre of its iron ore operations.

Two centres are proposed under the Pilbara Childcare Strategy, one in Newman and one in Port Hedland as well as grants for up to $30,000 each to existing childcare centres to be spent on capital works projects.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Sustainability Manager, Richard O'Connell said the company acknowledged the need for childcare services in the Pilbara and was looking forward to the potential partnership with the YMCA of Perth Inc.

"YMCA Perth is an experienced project partner and together we will be able to create a strategy to provide the best possible childcare service to the community," he said.

YMCA Perth's Chief Executive Officer, Ron Mell welcomed the opportunity and said the initiative would be very beneficial in contributing to strengthening sustainable communities within Newman and Port Hedland.

"We are extremely pleased to be embarking on this partnership opportunity with BHP Billiton Iron Ore and are looking forward to making a positive announcement regarding the outcomes of contract negotiations in the near future," he said.

"YMCA Perth is committed to the sustainability of childcare in the region and this can only be achieved through a partnership approach with all sectors of the community. BHP Billiton Iron Ore's commitment is therefore an essential and welcome contribution to this process."

The expansion of YMCA Perth into the Pilbara region will also involve the provision of training for childcare workers.
YMCA Perth currently operates five long-day childcare centres in Western Australia including four in regional areas.

It provides extensive training and support programs to regional child care centres throughout the State.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is highly committed to its community responsibilities and actively looks for and encourages new initiatives and partnerships that will support the sustainability of the communities in which it operates.
