A FAMILY-OWNED, custom-built caravan manufacturer primarily servicing the resources sector recently secured its first export deal with one of the world’s largest mining outfits.
Wangara-based Explorex Caravans locked in a contract with BHP Billiton almost two weeks ago to provide the mining giant with a steel-framed caravan worth more than $120,000 for its operations in West Africa.
Explorex Caravans founder and owner, Greg Ferguson (pictured below), was excited about the agreement, which was made at Perth’s Caravan and Camping Show.
“We’ve got one here which we just sold to BHP in West Africa,” Mr Feguson told WA Business News.
“That’s being exported next week, going to Liberia.”
Trade fairs and exhibitions have served Explorex well.
In 2002 Mr Ferguson built the prototype of his “solid, strong and indestructible” mining caravans at his Beverly farm before taking it to the 2003 Goldfields Mining Expo, where he secured three orders and launched the business.
Since that time, Explorex has grown into a multi-million dollar operation employing 10 staff and expanding its product offering to target the domestic leisure market.
“Now we have two streams to business – we have our mining caravans and off-road domestic caravans,” he said.
“It’s expanded our business, and now that mining has come back online, we’re under increasing production pressure so our numbers are going up all the time.”
