LARGE Australian wine player Casama Group, through its national wine warehousing and logistics arm BAM Wine Logistics, has been buoyed by the growing demand for specialist wine distributors and warehousers.
BAM is currently establishing a wine-focused warehousing and logistics operation in Western Australia to complement its expanding national service.
WA Group manager Rob Fanning said local producers he had spoken to were intrigued by BAM’s plans and had indicated previous problems with the industry.
He said some producers had even taken their own steps to pro-tect the integrity of their products.
“Although wine is not a perishable it is a consumable, and as a result its handling and storage is very important to avoid product damage, heat, light and wide variations in temperature which are wine’s worst enemy,” Mr Fanning said.
“Most producers, and in particular wine makers, are very conscious of this. Unfortunately the broader transport industry has become generalist combining beer, spirits, wine and the like.
“Many store their wine in facilities where the ambient temper-ature can vary enormously.”
