Co-ordinated by Emergency Management Australia, these awards aim to recognise best practice and innovation in emergency management by individuals and organisations.

Banksia Environmental Awards
Winner of the Leadership in Sustainable Product Design category in this year’s awards is local listed company Orbital Engine Corporation Limited, for its combustion process 2-stroke motorcycle technology.
Western Australian Environment Awards
These awards are now open for nominations in 15 categories.

WA Firefighter of the Year
Nominations are open for WA’s firefighter of the year awards, sponsored by RAC Insurance and the Rotary Club of Whitfords.
Members of the public are invited to nominate a firefighter, brigade or team from WA’s 20,000 volunteer and 850 career firefighters.
Nomination forms are available from FESA, fire stations, major tertiary hospitals, RAC branches, local governments and libraries.
Nominations close August 1.
Western Australian Industry and Export Awards

2003 Young Scientist Award
Gold researcher Noreen Vielreicher has won the international 2003 Young Scientist Award from the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits.
Dr Vielreicher, a postdoctoral research fellow with the University of Western Australia’s School of Earth and Geographical Sciences, has won a monetary prize, plus travel to Athens to accept the biennial award in August.
Dr Vielreicher’s major research expertise is in gold, in particular the relative and absolute timing of deposit formation.
This involves precise dating of gold-related minerals at a microscopic scale.
Dr Vielreicher completed undergraduate and
Masters studies in the UK and a PhD at UWA.
