Award winning doctorate

A UNIVERSITY of Western Australia researchers PhD thesis has won the award for the best PhD thesis from the Australian Agricultural and Resources Economics Society.

Rick Llewellyn set out to investigate whether farmers’ management techniques were affecting the number of herbicide resistant weeds in Australia.

"The situation for WA farmers is similar to the situation facing the medical profession where continued use of antibiotics has led to some bacteria being resistant to most classes of antibiotics," Dr Llewellyn said.

His two-year analysis of 132 WA farmers in the wheatbelt found a majority had a herbicide resistant weed population but all growers had the opportunity to conserve remaining herbicide options.

Growers had a high awareness of herbicide resistance and had adopted several integrated management techniques to overcome the problem.
