Australia wins first Ashes test by 277 runs

Australia took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series when it beat England by 277 runs in the first Test at the Gabba.

It took the home side just over 20 overs today to dismiss England's last five batsmen, with Stuart Clark claiming four wickets for the innings.

England scored 370 in its second innings.

Brett Lee captured the vital wicket of Kevin Pietersen in the first over of the day, when he lifted a catch off his pads straight to Damien Martyn at mid-wicket without adding to his overnight score of 92.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting was named man of the match.
