University of WA’s Institute of Advanced Studies and Asian Studies is holding a public forum on the topic of Australia’s engagement with Asia, May 17 at UWA’s Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. Australia has a long history of diverse relations with the Asian region, artistically, intellectually, economically, and military wise, to name a few. A panel of experts at the forum will examine Australia’s past, present and future relationship with Asia, particularly focusing on the changes and continuity in this relationship in previous years and how Australia can better equip itself to respond to rapid changes in this relationship. Dr Gary Sigley, chair of Asian studies and director of the Confucius Institute at UWA, will moderate the panel. The panellists will include UWA honorary senior research fellow Laksiri Jayasuriya; Louise Edwards, associate director research and professor of China studies at The University of Technology in Sydney; Kam Louie, dean of arts at the University of Hong Kong; and David Walker, professor of Australian studies at Deakin University. This is a free event for all with no RSVP required. For more information visit www.ias.uwa.edu.au.
