Henderson-based shipbuilder Austal has won a $US57.9 million ($80 million) contract with the US Navy to build a 103-metre catamaran.

Austal’s US division has been contracted to construct the expeditionary fast transport vessel.

It will be the 13th vessel ordered by the US Navy from Austal.

Austal was awarded the initial contract to design and build the first EPF in November 2008.

The vessel is a high-speed catamaran, designed for rapid intra-theatre transport of troops and cargo.

Since 2008, nine Spearhead-class EPFs have been delivered, with three currently under construction.

Shares in Austal finished flat at $1.80 each today.
