Atlas Iron has approved the development of its Wodgina iron ore project in the Pilbara, which has a capital cost of just under $10 million thanks to a deal with Talison Minerals.
The Pilbara miner plans to start production at Wodgina late next year at an initial rate of 2 million tonne a year, before ramping it to 3.6mt a year.
The ore will be trucked to the new Utah Point port facility, which is expected to be operational by April next year.
Estimated capital cost of Wodgina is $9.57 million, a minimal outlay made possible by using existing infrastructure at Talison's Wodgina tantalum mine.
Operating costs are projected to be between $38 and $45 a tonne.
