Art Idol to discover local talent

WHILE reality television has delivered fifteen minutes of fame to many a celebrity wannabe, a new art competition is set to launch the careers of aspiring Western Australian artists. Art Idol 2007, the inaugural competition of the Australia-Britain Society, is open to all Western Australians and will investigate the relationship between Australia and Britain as its theme. The organisers plan to display the winning entries at commercial galleries, with prizes to include art school scholarships and cash. Among the competition’s aims are the discovery of ‘hidden art talent in WA’ and the provision of ‘instant celebrity status to such talent’. The competition is supported by Rolf Harris (Art Idol’s Honorary Event Patron, pictured above), Sir Charles Court, Lord Wedgwood and the British Consul WA, and is currently seeking other sponsors.
