Local media personality Gary Mitchell will run in the City of Perth’s upcoming council election, becoming the fourth candidate to back Basil Zempilas’s lord mayoral campaign.

Mr Mitchell, who is also Mr Zempilas’s cousin, has been the host of community television program Sweet and Sour since 2000, which discusses current affairs and local issues.

He now joins Mustang Bar managing director Michael Keiller, prominent businesswoman Gloria Zhang, and Friends Restaurant owner Clyde Bevan in endorsing Mr Zempilas’s lord mayoral bid.

Speaking with Business News, Mr Mitchell said he would focus on promoting community television and bringing largescale events to the city if elected.

He also said he wanted to focus on crime, saying he wanted families to feel safe when they come to the city.

Mr Zempilas had previously come under criticism from opponents over his intention to assemble a slate of candidates who would support his bid and help provide a quorum on council

He disputed that assertion in an interview with Business News, saying he was simply supporting candidates who he knew and aligned with him on key issues.

Bob Kucera, who served as WA Police’s assistant commissioner and a minister in two Labor state governments, is understood to be advising Mr Zempilas and the four candidates running in support of his candidacy.

Mr Kucera has commented extensively on crime in recent years and will likely lend heft to Mr Zempilas's law and order platform.
