AUSTRALIA’S rush to sign a free trade agreement with the US
has been praised warmly by the right-side of politics and luke-warmly by the
left. Business, apart from a handful of sugar and beef farmers, appears to love
it. The thread linking those in favour is that Australia appears to have so
much in common with America, a view that has skipped lightly over what we do
not share, and not only is that a long list – but it is one that could cost
Australia dearly in the future.
