Alinta Energy has been granted regulatory approval to supply electricity to Hancock Prospecting's $10 billion Roy Hill iron ore project.
The Economic Regulation Authority yesterday granted Alinta subsidiary Alinta Energy Transmission (Roy Hill) a 30-year licence to generate, transmit, distribute and supply electricity via a 123 kilometre power transmission line from the Newman Power Station to the Roy Hill mine site.
The ERA said it was satisfied that Alinta had the financial and technical capacity to supply power to carry out the activities under the license and that there were no public interest objections.
The Roy Hill project is due to start mining next year and achieve its first iron ore exports in the third quarter of 2015.
