The state government today launched a two-year project to increase the supply of labour to the agrifood industry through migration, workforce development and training.

The Department of Agriculture and Food and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA will work together on the Agrifood Labour Initiative

Western Australia’s agrifood sector is worth almost $6 billion, with the majority of production going to exports.

“Experience shows that businesses in these sectors rely heavily on a transient workforce,” Agriculture and Food Minister Ken Baston said.

“WA’s agriculture and food sector has the opportunity to harness growth in demand from export markets.

“Better access to skilled and semi-skilled labour will be critical in taking advantage of these opportunities.

“The Agrifood Labour Initiative will coordinate actions to improve access to suitable labour through workforce development, training and migration strategies.”
