National company Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd has secured its first major contract with the state government, having been selected to design and construct stage two of the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today welcomed Abigroup to its first major contract with the WA Government.
"We have been working hard across government to encourage more large civil construction companies to WA and create more competition in the sector," Ms MacTiernan said.
"For this project, it has teamed with Sinclair Knight Merz as the designer and other specialist consultants.
"Its presence in WA can only help increase the competitiveness of the State's high quality civil construction sector, which is currently dominated by a very small number of major contractors."
The Minister said the GSTC Stage Two project would increase road safety and efficiency on a vitally important freight link between Geraldton Port and the Mid-West's mining and agricultural areas east of the city.
The project, worth $58 million, included constructing four new intersections and design provision for two major proposed future roads.
Contracts are expected to be signed in August and construction to begin by the end of the year, with the road open to traffic in early 2010.
