ATO chief targets tax havens

New tax commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo has promised a tough response to cases of blatant abuse, while defending the decision by the Australian Taxation Office not to lay charges against former Reserve Bank board member Robert Gerard. In his first public speech since becoming head of the ATO, Mr D’Ascenzo also foreshadowed a more consultative approach, more advanced technology to provide front-line staff with taxpayers’ real time financial history, and an effort to slash red tape for business.
