A growing volume of WA contracts has prompted engineering and infrastructure company AJ Lucas to open a Perth office as it today secured a $95 million contract for works at the Gorgon gas project.

The Sydney-based company today said it will carry out works for the shore crossing to connect the upstream facilities for the $43 billion Gorgon project to Barrow Island.

The contract comprises the construction of nine holes using directional drilling emerging in the region of 400 metres offshore.

The construction of the holes is expected to minimise any environmental impact.

AJ Lucas said it will be ordering two new rigs to carry out the work, with engineering work already underway and site works to start in May next year.

"We are particularly pleased and proud to have been selected to provide the shore crossings," chief executive Allan Campbell said.

"Lucas prides itself on its horizontal directional drilling capability to minimise any environmental impact."

The company added that to service the contract and Lucas' other project activities in Western Australia, it had recently opened an office in West Perth.

The Gorgon project is a joint venture between Chevron, ExxonMobil and Shell.
