Champagne corks are popping at 96FM, with the station managing to beat long-term market leader Mix 94.5 in the ratings, but only just.
Mix managed to claw back some of its audience from the previous survey's crash but a 1.6 percentage point gain to 96FM saw it leap-frog 94.5 and 92.9 into the top spot, according to the latest Nielsen survey, released today.
96FM claimed 13.3 per cent of audience share, Mix 13.2 per cent and 92.9 11.4 per cent, the survey said.
Most of the gain came from 96FM's breakfast team of "Blackers, Carmen and Fitzi" - Ian Blackley, Carmen Braidwood and Brad Fitzgerald, who enjoyed a 2.9 percentage point bounce to end up with 12.4 per cent of the audience.
However they still trail The Bunch on Mix and breakfast leader Gillian O'Shaughnessy on ABC720, which has 14.8 per cent of the audience.
The biggest losers in breakfast were Nova's Nathan, Nat and Shaun who dropped 1.8 percentage points to finish with 11.4 per cent of the audience.
"This is a fantastic result for the entire team here at 96Fm who have believed in the new programming strategy and have worked tirelessly to achieve the Number One position," 96FM general manager Martin Boylen said.
"We will continue to refine the radio station and deliver an on-air product that is innovative, compelling, relevant and enjoyable to our listeners."
