An $80 million plan to redevelop the former Woodside hospital in East Fremantle is progressing with applicant Hall & Prior recently submitting an application.

A development application with a price tag of $80 million was lodged in the Joint Development Assessment Panel pathway last week.

Dubbed the Woodside Care Precint Project, the development application was prepared by Planning Solutions on behalf of Hall & Prior Health and Aged Care Group and Fresh Fields Projects.

The development application, with designs by Kerry Hill Architects, proposes a residential aged care facility complex comprising buildings of three to four storeys high and two supported independent living homes.

The heritage-listed Woodside hospital is proposed to be retained and refurbished, with the upper floors for serviced suites and the ground floor to be open to residents and the community.

A total of 158 aged care beds is proposed for the residential aged care facility, with options for residents living as couples and beds dedicated to residents with low financial means.

Other features include a 94-bay carpark and a wellness centre comprising five consulting rooms, strength and conditioning facilities, massage room and hydrotheraphy pool.

The applicant is proposing to offer high care and low care accommodation options at the facility including specialist palliative care, dementia care, disability care and a range of allied health services.

"The Woodside Care Precinct will provide much needed residential aged care in the local area to meet the growing demand," the application said.

"The new facility will be the only residential aged care facility in the Town of East Fremantle south of Canning Highway.

"The proposal will provide much needed housing diversity and choice for or older persons in the community and allow long-standing residents to 'age in place'."

Hall & Prior purchased a one hectare lot between Dalgety and Fortescue streets, which has the former Woodside maternity hospital, for $13 million in 2017.

According to the development application original concept plans from 2020 showed a proposed development on one lot only but Hall & Prior has since bought two adjoining lots.

All three lots are intended to be amalgamated before construction starts.

The State heritage listed property, initially named Woodside House, was a private residence from 1902 until its first use as a hospital in 1923.

The hospital closed and became residential units in 1946, but was converted again to a public maternity hospital after the State Government bought the site in the 1950s.

It stopped operating as a public hospital in 2006 but the Department of Health administration staff stayed until closure in 2015.

The Town of East Fremantle has advertised the proposal on its website for public feedback until August 12.
