A $12.6 million package will be allocated in the state budget to preserve and enhance one of the state’s “top cultural and tourism assets”.

The state government announced in a statement today that the 2022-23 budget will include $12.6 million for critical maintenance and restoration works at selection locations around Fremantle Prison.

The statement also said the WA government is seeking matching funding from its federal counterpart.

The $12.6 million is on top of the state government's 2020 announcement that $1.6 million from the WA Recovery Funds will go towards conservation works at the prison.

The site is the only World Heritage listed building in WA and recently received a gold medal in the Cultural Tourism category in the 2021 Australian Tourism Awards.

"Fremantle Prison is an important piece of our state's heritage that continues to serve as a unique reminder of our modern architectural, social and penal history,” Heritage minister David Templeman said.

"In collaboration with the federal government, this funding will preserve and enhance this unique Western Australian icon."

Fremantle Prison also received $320,000 from the federal government’s Australian Heritage Grants 2020-21 program and $91,000 from the Accessibility and Inclusion Plan early last year.

The $320,000 grant will be delivered over two years in conjunction with the Aboriginal Heritage Management Plan identifying and guiding the culturally appropriate interpretation of the site's history.

The state government previously invested more than $5 million worth of projects to repair the prison’s main cell block, restore the Commissariat, and upgraded Main Parade Ground and Prison Hospital.
