10 years of help (with video)

The partnership between big accounting firm Ernst & Young and not-for-profit organisation St Vincent de Paul has reached a significant milestone, with the 10-year anniversary of the Homework Centre.

The centre offers one-on-one educational assistance to disadvantaged children in years three to seven and has helped more than 150 children in the Belmont Area.

Ernst & Young approached St Vincent de Paul with the concept for the centre. It was seeking corporate volunteering opportunities for its staff members.

Ten years on and Ernst & Young employees continue to offer their time and help students with their homework.

Children are provided with afternoon tea, a tutoring session and an interactive activity such as arts and crafts, science experiments and theatre sports.

The centre also aims to develop the children's social and communication skills, while also improving their self-esteem.

The centre has a capacity of 12 children per term and operates at the St Vincent de Paul Society head office in Belmont.
