The WA Police Union was founded in 1912, constituted as the Western Australian Police Association. In 1926, the Western Australian Police Association became the Western Australian Police Union of Workers after it was registered in the Court of Arbitration of Western Australia as an Industrial Trade Union.

The WA Police Union is a member of The Police Federation of Australia, peak union body that represents the interests of Australian police officers. The PFA was formally registered under Federal industrial law on 1 January 1998.
